A Pet is a Pet….It’s the Love That Counts! by Pam Todd

Sometimes I think some people carry “political correctness” a bit too far.  There was an article in our local newspaper a few weeks ago regarding calling our pets “pets”.  The writer said this was disrespectful of the animals that are part of our families.  Well, I truly don’t think our dogs, cats, hamsters, guinea pigs, rabbits, turtles, birds, fish, and whatever other animals we make part of our families are really going to care about what we call them when we refer to them.  They (especially the warm-blooded ones) will remember if we talk to them in kind voices, feed them, give them water, talk to them often, play with them, give them a comfortable and clean place to sleep, stroke them, hug them, pat them, and show our love for them in every way we can.  We can call them pets, family members, companions, friends, babies, or whatever we want.  We just need to love them and take good care of them. And that’s how I feel about that topic!

You're right! If we love our pets and treat them properly and care for them responsibily in every way we can, they do not care what we call them. The word "pet" always has been and always will be a good word to describe the animals we have as part of our families. And as with all relationships, it's what we DO that matters most.

Yes, I just noticed this in the other animal crafter's group I am in. Soon no one will want to talk about animals for fear of saying something wrong.
